HMAS Kuttabul
Gallus Partners were engaged by the client to manage the design and construction delivery of the refurbishment of a building located within the historic navy base of HMAS Kuttabul, Garden Island in Sydney's east.
A high priority and operational critical infrastructure system on behalf of the Australian Defence Department. Under the direction of Gallus, a new world leading facility for the design, manufacture and trial of Robotic and Autonomous Systems was achieved.
The development utilises a historic brick naval workshop and clothes store warehouse. Through careful planning and innovative design, a state of the art, high secure facility incorporating mixed uses of offices, workshop, open plan collaboration spaces and breakout recreational idea hub zones was created.
Retaining the existing exterior to protect and align with the sites historical precinct requirements, the new development places modulised pods and removable construction methodology within the existing fabric enabling future upgrades to be possible as well as restoration back to the existing condition. A ‘one-touch’ approach to construction and longevity of future capability allowed for the inclusion of recycled materials, energy monitoring technology, passive heating and cooling systems. The Building 30 project under the guidance of Gallus has become a technologically advanced office and workshop space for conducting RAS research, engineering and manufacturing in Sydney and a precedent for future Defence and Private industry collaboration models within the Defence and Innovation sectors.
